Terminal shuttle reopens today
01.07.10
A 10-month project to renew the airport’s inter-terminal shuttle train was completed today. The end of the £43 million refurbishment, two months ahead of schedule, means the reinstatement of the connection between the South and North Terminals in time for the summer peak travel period.
The new state-of-the-art inter-terminal shuttle will provide passengers with a fast and comfortable journey between the North and South Terminals. New trains, track and refurbished stations have been installed on the 20-year old system. Other benefits include: the use of sensory technology, which counts the number of passengers waiting at the station triggering the operation of the shuttle; extra seating; live journey information; high levels of security with monitored onboard CCTV cameras and full accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility.
Former NASA astronaut and member of Gatwick’s Board James van Hoften joined passengers and staff for the relaunch of the shuttle. The airport's chief executive Stewart Wingate said: ‘By investing in new facilities Gatwick will go from strength to strength.’
