Baggage system failure causes flight delays
02.08.10
Thousands of passengers taking holiday flights were faced with delays on Saturday when baggage machines broke down at Gatwick, the Daily Mail reports. Around 40 departing flights were delayed by up to 4 hours by the problems, which affected belts moving luggage from check-in to departure areas at both the airport's North and South terminals, creating long queues.
An airport spokesman told the newspaper delays were a result of the problems that occurred 'off and on' between 03:00 and 06:00 on Saturday morning. The belt failures had a greater effect because of the volume of passengers travelling during one of the busiest periods of the year, he said.
Mainly Virgin and easyJet flights that departed late, because of delays getting bags on to planes. However, a spokesman for Virgin said the problem was 'relatively minimal' and caused four of the airline's flights to be delayed by around an hour.
