IATA says passenger growth returns but Europe lags rest of world
05.07.10
Global air traffic rebounded in May after the impact of the volcanic ash chaos in Europe, the International Air Traffic Association (IATA) said. There was an 11.7% rise in May compared with the same month in 2008 and a 9.0% increase compared to 2009.
The increase in May follows a 5.5% decline in April (compared to last year), which was largely caused by the shutdown of air space in Europe by the ash cloud. IATA said European airlines bore 70% of the damage caused by the shutdown and their traffic had still not returned to pre-ash levels. It is added that it is also 4.5% lower than the global average.
