Poor road layout could have caused fatal crash

A woman was killed minutes after dropping off her newly-married best friend to Gatwick to fly off for her honeymoon, an inquest heard last week. The coroner concluded that the road layout near the airport terminal could have contributed to the accident.
Melanie Wisden, 34, of Ely, Cardiff, had taken the day off work to drive her just-married friends 200 miles to Gatwick for their flight to Tenerife. Her 11 year old daughter was one of their bridesmaids two days earlier. But as she left the airport after dropping them off, her Ford Ka crashed into a National Express coach and Ms Wisden was crushed to death.
The inquest heard she may have been confused by unclear road signs and the number of different lanes for cars. West Sussex deputy coroner Christopher Wilkinson told the inquest that he will write to the Highways Authority asking for a review of the road layout at the accident spot.
