Mexicana suspend flights
09.08.10
Mexicana has suspended its four times weekly Gatwick to Mexico City service today. The move comes after the airline filed for bankruptcy protection in both Mexico and the US late last week. At the time it said it would continue to operate its Gatwick flights, but the route is one of 18 now suspended by the airline as it tries to reduce costs.
The Mexican national airline, which suffered a dramatic fall in passengers following last year’s swine flu outbreak, has debts of more than £628m. In a statement it said that its financial situation is no longer sustainable after the unions failed to agree its cost-saving measures. It says its pilots earn up to 50 percent more than the average wage paid by US airlines and its flight attendants earn 32 percent more than the US average.
Passengers due to fly with Mexicana over the coming days will be rebooked on other airlines. Those with bookings further forward should contact the airline on 0808 101 7600.
