Aviation consultancy RDC Aviation has released figures derived from CAA data showing that Britain's 33 busiest airports have all reported lower passenger numbers in the first eight months of the year, which includes the main summer peak months.
British travellers took 9% fewer flights overall, but there are much sharper falls to our most popular holiday destination, Spain – with a a 16% fall – and America, travellers from London airports down 10%. The fall in passengers to New York was even more pronounced, with a decline of over 16%.
Some airports have been particularly badly hit. Gatwick lost 2 million passengers during the eight month period, and traffic at Prestwick Airport was down by a quarter.
