Weather hits flights

High winds and rain pummelling the South of England this morning are causing travel disruption and flooding - but the worst is yet to come. Winds of more than 80 mph are ripping across the south with a slight lull for a few hours before the gales pick up again later this afternoon, weather forecasters say.
Already trees have been uprooted, buildings damaged and trains and flights delayed or cancelled. At Heathrow, 41 flights out of the airport have been cancelled this morning, with BA the worst hit, and at Gatwick 11 outbound flights were cancelled and 10 inbound ones diverted to other airports, including a Continental Airways flight from New York, which had to touch down at Dublin.
Winds of more than 50 mph caused all ground operations at Bristol Airport to be suspended between 04:00 and 06:00 today. This led to delays when the first flights took to the air later this morning.
A spokesman said: ‘It was so windy overnight that we could not do any of our early-morning ground operation work. The first flight took off 40 minutes late and there will be delays to other services. We expect to operate around 100 flights today and we are hoping we will be able to get everyone away.’
Stansted Airport was operating as normal, but the airport said that it had accepted a diverted flight from London City Airport because of the weather. A spokesman said Stansted was not expected to suffer major problems because of the weather.
