Heavy snow hits flights again
14.01.10
Heavy snow yesterday saw airports close again, as road and rail transport transport links were thrown in to chaos, following several days of warmer weather during which some of the snow had melted. Gatwick, London City, Birmingham, Cardiff and Southampton airports were closed, while at Heathrow 84 mostly short-haul or domestic flights were cancelled, both arrivals and departures.
Britain experiencing its coldest winter in three decades, with the fresh blanket of snow on St Hilary's Day, the coldest day of the year according to medieval lore, halting flights from Gatwick, Birmingham, Cardiff and Southampton airports, with a knock on effect at many other UK airports for domestic routes. However, there are signs of a respite to the bitter start to the new year, with the Met Office predicting that milder air will bring rain across much of the country by the weekend.
