Government will not call in terminal plans
21.11.09
The Government will not call in a planning application to extend Gatwick Airport's North Terminal. The decision whether to grant planning permission now rests with Crawley Borough Council, which last month indicated that it would approve the scheme.
The application seeks to extend the North Terminal to enable Gatwick to handle 40 million passengers a year with 20,000 extra flights. The airport will also build a new car park. The Government had imposed a direction on Crawley Borough Council to stop it from giving planning permission until it had decided whether a public inquiry should be held, as the plans affect people living across a wide area outside of the Borough. Now that threat has been removed and the Council can make its decision.
