Astronaut gets airport role
22.11.09
The new owners of Gatwick have appointed James van Hoften, a former astronaut who now runs the airports arm of American engineering giant Bechtel and previously worked at Hong Kong Airport, to its new board of directors. Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), the GE / Credit Suisse backed joint venture that agreed to buy Gatwick last month, has unveiled its board, with former permanent secretary for the Department of Transport Sir David Rowlands the airport's new chairman.
Sir David said: ‘An independent Gatwick has a tremendous opportunity to inject real competition into the London airports market. This new board will work with the airport’s management team to drive it to a competitive future in its target market through more efficient operations and a relentless focus on customer service.’
GIP, which also owns London City Airport, expects to complete the acquisition of Gatwick in the first week of December. Other non-executive board directors of Gatwick include former BAA International managing director Andrew Jurenko, ex-head of transport at Credit Suisse Michael McGhee and former head of GE Infrastructure Bill Woodburn.
