Staff shortages blamed for airport queues

Queues at UK airports were made longer this weekend by the Government's failure to recruit enough immigration officers to keep pace with soaring passenger numbers, the Conservatives have said.
Their immigration spokesman, Damian Green, released figures showing that the number of immigration officers at Heathrow and Gatwick have increased by 5.9% since 2001, whilst passenger numbers has grown by 12.5% over the same period.
He said that the disparity is causing ‘misery’ for passengers, who are forced to queue for long periods as they come back into the country after trips abroad.
