New technology to cut emissions and delays
26.07.10
Gatwick has reached an agreement with air traffic control company NATS to provide a new technology solution that will reduce emissions and passenger delays at the airport. The system will also allow the airport to make a quicker recovery from service disruptions.
The Airport Collaborative Decision-Making (A-CDM) system is designed to synchronise the management of the airfield. It allows aircraft positions, arrival times, departure sequences and other information to be displayed on one screen or handheld device so that all those operating at the airport are working from the same set of data. The system also tracks flights along the entire journey, providing more accurate details on the information screens, leading to fewer delays for passengers.
David Wilson, head of airside operations at Gatwick, said: 'A-CDM will not only increase the airport's capacity, it will improve our aircraft stand management, traffic flows, taxi times and reduce congestion. Gatwick is already the world's busiest civil runway [single runway airport]. This new technology will lead to more efficient operations, lower emissions and lower costs for our airlines.'
