Gatwick hotel detention centre plans rejected
27.01.10
Plans to convert a hotel near Gatwick into an immigration detention and removal centre have been refused. Arora Management Services, who own the hotel, had applied for permission to convert the four-star Mercure Gatwick near the airport's north terminal into a secure removal unit. However, the 'speculative' application was turned down by planning officers at Crawley Borough Council on the grounds there was no proven need for the facility.
There are currently two immigration detention centres near Gatwick, and the Home Office confirmed yesterday that it had no plans to open a third removal unit near the airport. Local residents and businesses objected to the plans, saying they were not comfortable with a facility surrounded by a security fence on the airports doorstep.
